For thirty six years it incinerated most of the city’s rubbish, generated electric power for the city and its 150 foot brick chimney was a Christchurch landmark. The story of the Destructor is interesting, partly because it is a story untold, and partly because of the controversy surrounding the decision to build the furnace. It was one of the few times, in the nineteenth century, that the local councils of the area found common ground and ranks as one of the major steps towards amalgamation of the boroughs with the central city, providing the basis for modern Christchurch.
